Introduction to the November 2020 Knowledge Letter

Two years ago in the late summer of 2018, John Hovell, Nancy Dixon and I ran a Conversational Leadership workshop at the Elevetham - just a few miles from my home.

Last year, John Hovell, Donita Volkwign and I ran it online and in 2021, we (John Hovell, Donita Volkwijn, Saule Menane and I) had hoped to hold it at the Elevetham but once again it will have to be run online.

So join our third annual conference on April 26 – 30 2021 to experience the power of conversation, to explore questions that matter, learn about yourself, others, and the world, and practice impossible conversations.

Our ability to lead depends on our ability to host and convene quality conversations.

Registration does not open until the new year but if you wish to express your interest or have any inquiries please email [email protected].

Do you know the difference between complex and complicated?

Do you know the difference between complex and complicated?

Most people don't. It's an important distinction to understand when living and working in a complex world.

Sonja Blignaut outlines several differences in this blog post 7 Differences between complex and complicated

The Cynefin Framework also helps you take better decisions by making the distinction clear.

Stop doing things to each other

If we are to encourage engagement and ownership not buy-in then we must stop trying to do things to each other.

So many of the problems that we face in our organizations and society revolve around the fact that we are always trying to do things to each other - to change or manipulate them.

I wrote this post on Stop doing things to each other some years ago and have incorporated it into my blook on Conversational Leadership.

The embedded video of me talking about the topic must have been made over 10 years ago.

Talk to strangers

Talk to strangers: As a child, we are taught not to talk with strangers, and as a 4-year-old with little experience of the world, this probably sound advice. But as an adult, talking with strangers may be remarkably rewarding.

Don't Take Notes During a Lecture!

An interesting suggestion by Jordan Peterson - Dont Take Notes During a Lecture!

Don't take notes during a lecture as then you are not listening to the lecture. Take notes after the lecture.
