****** The Gurteen Knowledge-Letter (Issue 47, 4 May 2004) ******

I was recently told of someone whose health had suffered due to
stress as they were unable to cope with the volume of daily e-mail
they received. Not all of us react so negatively by clearly the
problems of e-mail overload are increasing daily.

In light of this Edward Truch of Knowledge Partners and I have got
together to conduct a survey on e-mail in the workplace. The results
will be presented at the annual conference of the Henley Knowledge
Management Forum in June 2004, following which they will be published
on our respective websites. This study will also form part of the
ongoing research at Henley into improving ways of working in all
types of organization.

If you have the time we'd appreciate it if you could complete the
survey. It should not take more than 10 minutes. Your responses will
be treated in strict confidence and only general results will be
published. Thank you.

************* CRITICAL SKILLS FOR KNOWLEDGE WORKERS *************

There are still places left on my workshop "Critical Skills for
Knowledge Workers" to be held in London next week.

This workshop will be useful if you are serious about transforming
the way that you work, your ability to create and innovate and your
ability to improve the way that you manage and interact with other
people in your organization.

***************** DAVE SNOWDEN MASTERCLASS CDS *****************

I am a huge fan of Dave Snowden, Director of the IBM Cynefin Centre,
and his ground breaking work and provocative thinking on such
subjects as knowledge management, narrative and organizational
complexity. So I am delighted to be able to make available through my
website two computer based training CD ROMs which represent two
master-classes presented by Dave Snowden.

"Using narrative in organizational change"

"Emergent Knowledge Management"

For more information about the CD ROMs or to learn more about Dave
Snowden and his work see:

**************** WHAT IS THE POINT OF EDUCATION? ****************

I am a member of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA). They produce a
great journal and many of the articles are published online. Here is
one by Dorothy Rowe that I particularly like on the point of
education.

She believes that the point of education is to prepare people to take
responsibility for their own lives. If people do not assume authority
over themselves, they cannot use their creativity and curiosity to
the full, nor discover the art of living wisely.

You will find other articles from the April 2004 edition on the same
page.

******************** BUSINESS BUZZWORD BINGO ********************

Thanks to my old friend Gary Freeman for introducing me to "Business
Buzzword Bingo". This looks great fun and I am dying to play it.

***************** MY LIFE AS A KNOWLEDGE WORKER *****************

This is a great article by Peter Drucker published in Inc. Magazine
where he describes seven personal experiences that taught him how to
grow, change, and age. The sixth experience, I find interesting - a
form of personal after-action review.

"Whenever a Jesuit priest or a Calvinist pastor does anything of
significance -- making a key decision, for instance -- he is expected
to write down what results he anticipates. Nine months later he
traces back from the actual results to those anticipations. That very
soon shows him what he did well and what his strengths are. It also
shows him what he has to learn and what habits he has to change.
Finally, it shows him what he has no gift for and cannot do well."

********************* THE CHILD IS CURIOUS *********************

I have a large number of profiles of people on my website whose ideas
I like or have inspired me in some way. One of my favorites is John
Holt - listen to what he has to say on children and schooling:

"The child is curious. He wants to make sense out of things, find out
how things work, gain competence and control over himself and his
environment, and do what he can see other people doing. He is open,
perceptive, and experimental. He does not merely observe the world
around him, He does not shut himself off from the strange,
complicated world around him, but tastes it, touches it, hefts it,
bends it, breaks it. To find out how reality works, he works on it.
He is bold. He is not afraid of making mistakes. And he is patient.
He can tolerate an extraordinary amount of uncertainty, confusion,
ignorance, and suspense ... School is not a place that gives much
time, or opportunity, or reward, for this kind of thinking and
learning."

If you have children of school age or are in anyway interested in
education then I suggest you take the time to look at John Holt's
work.

********* FACILITATING SERENDIPITY ON YOUR MOBILE PHONE *********

"Tell us where you are, and we'll broadcast your location to all your
friends and let you know if any friends-of-friends are within 10
blocks!"

I have been speculating about such systems for some time now and it
looks like they are starting to happen. I just love this idea. It is
also a wonderful example of new business opportunities that are
opening up. I believe the web, mobile technologies and social
networking applications such as this are going to change our lives
dramatically :-)

********* HENLEY KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT FORUM CONFERENCE *********

I will be attending the 4th Annual Henley Knowledge Management Forum
conference is coming up in June. The overall theme of the conference
is "The Knowledge Management Journey". It will look at the progress
companies have made, some of the tools and techniques that help speed
the process and how the issues faced changed along the way.

It looks like being another great event with speakers include Leif
Edvinsson, Bob Buckman, David Skyme, Victor Newman, Ibrahim Gogus and
more. Although this is predominantly a conference for members, a
limited number of places are available for non-members.

*********************** SPIRITUAL GROWTH ***********************

I've long been looking for a what I might term a 'grounded'
definition of spirituality. One that is independent of religion and
not overly "new age" or "fluffy". I'm still looking :-)

But take a look at this article on spiritual growth by Scott Peck:

***************** THE RISE OF SOCIAL NETWORKING *****************

Social Networking is getting hotter and hotter. You can hardly read
anything on the web these days without tripping over the term ... and
new social networking sites and applications seem to be going live
daily.

I love Steve Denning's work on storytelling and narrative and while
browsing his website discovered he has a new book due out soon in
June 2004 - Squirrel Inc. There are some advance chapters online ...
well worth a look.
