The Gurteen Knowledge Letter is a monthly newsletter that is distributed to members of the Gurteen Knowledge Community. You may receive the Knowledge Letter by joining the community. Membership is totally free. You may read back-copies here. ** The Gurteen Knowledge-Letter (Issue 75, 12 September 2006) ** This newsletter may seem a little unbalanced this month as I talk about little else then video and multimedia. But then it does reflect my huge interest in this area right now. The web has matured in the last few years: most people have broad band access; PCs are faster and have substantial memory and all in all the technology has hugely improved - this makes the resource requirements of multimedia less demanding and a host of new technologies have sprung up. I think one of the hottest is Flash Video that is becoming more and more prevalent. I really realized how things had changed when I subscribed to my first video podcast and downloaded several excellent TEDTalks to my video iPod and spent an hour that evening in an armchair watching Jimmy Wales talk about Wikipedia and Mena Trott on blogging. I never thought I'd want to watch video material on such a small screen but with interesting content it is brilliant! My second insight, partially prompted by David Wilcox, was that I could easily take video interviews of people myself and post them on my site for almost zero cost and little of my precious time. These are great knowledge sharing technologies and I would invite you to look long and hard at them and think about their application within your organizational context! Enjoy :-) Jimmy Wale, founder of Wikipedia on TEDTalks http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/mp?open&mf=L002701 Mena Trott explores the personal side of blogging on TEDTalks http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/mp?open&mf=L002702 *************************** CONTENTS *************************** 1 - Changes to this newsletter 2 - What is KM? Video Interviews. 3 - Google News Archive Search 4 - Gurteen Conversations 5 - Online Poll: Podcasting? 6 - Media Player Update 7 - Flickr your Events 8 - KM Event Highlights 9 - Lesson of the Month from Fifty Lessons ****************** CHANGES TO THIS NEWSLETTER ****************** There are many changes that I would like to make to this newsletter but I never seem to quite find the time :-) But I am making a start. I am doing away with the long events listing at the end of the letter. It was just getting too long and I never knew what to include and what to leave out. In its place I am expanding the KM Event highlights section that highlights only the major KM events around the world and in particular the ones that I am involved with. If you wish to see the full event listing you have several choices 1. Keep track of them on my website http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/events 2. Register to receive event alerts for your region by e-mail http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/events 3. Subscribe to one of regional RSS feeds http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/rss-feeds I think this is good solution - I hope you do too. ***************** WHAT IS KM? VIDEO INTERVIEWS. ***************** Prompted by a couple of video interviews with David Wilcox; the Weblog Project and my girlfriends fancy Casio digital camera I decided to take a series of "What is Knowledge Management" interviews at the ECKM conference in Budapest a week or so ago. Given it was spur of the moment and zero experience of doing this I am absolutely delighted with the results - 14 clips - and plan a whole load more. Take a look - I think you will enjoy them. http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/wiskm David Wilcox http://partnerships.typepad.com/civic/2006/08/identifying_rep.html The Weblog Project http://www.theweblogproject.com ****************** GOOGLE NEWS ARCHIVE SEARCH ****************** I just can't keep up with Google. They have recently released "Google News Archive Search". This is what the say about it: News archive search provides an easy way to search and explore historical archives. Users can search for events, people, ideas and see how they have been described over time. In addition to searching for the most relevant articles for their query, users can get an historical overview of the results by browsing an automatically created timeline. Articles related to a single story within a given time period are grouped together to allow users to see a broad perspective on the events. http://news.google.com/archivesearch/about.html Other interesting stuff from Google http://labs.google.com/ ********************* GURTEEN CONVERSATIONS ********************* If you have been following the Gurteen Conversations website then you will find another multimedia presentation available this month - a recent knowledge cafe where Jason Bates used Copernicus as the inspiration for a session exploring KM as a "solar system". http://www.i-t-l.com/gurteen_kcon/ I-T-L who produce these multimedia knowledge assets are currently looking for Business partners. If you are a consultant or consultancy who have a client base who you think could benefit from their services and wish to add to your own value proposition you might like to contact Brad Meyer at brad.meyer@i-t-l.com More information on I-T-L http://www.i-t-l.com ******************* ONLINE POLL: PODCASTING? ******************* In July I posted a on-line poll asking "Whether you thought patents protected or hindered innovation? There was only a small response but 55% of you thought patents helped protect innovation. So about 50:50. I am a little surprised as I find it hard to see why people would invest in R&D without some form of patent system. http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/poll-july-2006 In keeping with my focus this month I have started a new poll to try to get some idea of your podcasting listening habits: http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/poll-sept-2006 ********************** MEDIA PLAYER UPDATE ********************** I have spent a lot of time developing the media player that I have embedded in my website. Its a strange kind of beast as although it looks like a single media player - it is in fact a hodgepodge of a number of media players brought in a single seamless environment. It supports a large range of media formats including YouTube, Google Video, Windows Media Files etc but I have just been trying to add support for MP3, podcasting and FLV and SWF formats. This has taken a lot of research. I have found a great embeddable mp3 player from Google. This is so clean and so Google Video like that I don't think I can do better. I am also experimenting with Wimpy Wasp Player that will play SWFs and FLVs see here. And finally I found Odeo - the mp3/podcast equivalent to Google Video - so now I can not only embed an MP3 player but also a podcast player!!! Amazing :-) I am almost at the stage where my player can cope with most of the standard formats available which is very satisfying. Its looking a very rich indeed. There is still however a shortage of good KM material but its growing by the day. Links to all the above goodies http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/mp-update Media Player http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/media-player ********************** FLICKR YOUR EVENTS ********************** I recently wrote a document for my website that explains how to load photos up to the Flickr photo website and tag them so everyone can have access to a single slide show that merges the photos taken by many different people at a conference or other event. I wrote this for attendees of the ECKM 2006 conference held in Budapest. Its a great way of sharing photos of a conference and captures the heart and the soul of an event so I thought I'd share it with you :-) Take a look at the page below - it gives you the instructions you need and a few examples. Flickr your Events http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/flickr-events ECKM 2006 http://www.academic-conferences.org/eckm/eckm2006/eckm06-home.htm ********************** KM EVENT HIGHLIGHTS ********************** This section highlights some of the major KM events taking place around the world in the next 3 months and ones in which I am actively involved. You will find a full list on my website where you can also subscribe to both regional e-mail alerts and RSS feeds which will keep you informed of new and upcoming events. http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/events Social Network Tools and their Business Application 20 - 21 Sep 2006, London, United Kingdom http://www.unicom.co.uk/product_detail.asp?prdid=1516 I will be chairing this event - it should prove a great introduction to the application of Social Tools in business.
