The Gurteen Knowledge-Letter (Issue 42, 8 December 2003)
Well from my humble perspective my 2nd knowledge conference was a
great success. What pleased me most was that it was a PowerPoint free
day and was very interactive and participatory - thanks in huge part
to the speaker/facilitators Mick Cope, Adrian Hosford, Victoria Ward
and Elizabeth Lank and of course the 50 or so participants.

If you are interested in the day then Shane Godbolt and Tim Dee have
written up a short report from their perspective see:

http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/x0006d642?open&p=0

I particularly like Tim's insight from the day:

"Knowledge is not something you keep in your head, it's a behavior."

To download some of the material from the day see :

http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/x0006e80e?open&p=0

And as this is my last knowledge letter before 2004 I'll take the
opportunity to wish you a great Christmas and a fun New Year :-)

***************** BOOKS ON EMPIRICAL KNOWLEDGE *****************

One of the most active participants at my conference was Geri Furlong
of the University of Greenwich Business School. Geri gave a lot of
useful input and mentioned several interesting books which she has
listed for me below and to which I have added the Amazon links. I
hope you find them useful.

The Anatomy of Judgement: An Investigation into the processes
of perception and Reasoning, M.L.J. Abercrombie
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1853431060/

Mind in Society: The Development of Higher Psychological Processes,
L.S.Vygotsky
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0674576292/

Problems of Knowledge: Acritical introduction to epistomology, M.
Williams
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0192892568/

Individuals: An essay in descriptive metaphysics, P.F. Strawson
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0415051851/

The Concept of Mind, Gilbert Ryle
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0141182172/

Metaphors of Mind: Conceptions of the Nature of Intelligence,
Robert J.Sternberg
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0521386330/

A comment from Geri - "This is a good starting point for those
interested in the concepts I was speaking of yesterday. These are not
practitioners but bonafide researchers who are interested in
empirical knowledge and different perspectives on life and the human
condition, very relevant to knowledge organizations, I think."

***** HOW TO COOPERATE WITH THINGS THAT HAVE THEIR OWN MIND *****

I often get some great little tidbits from people signing up for my
knowledge-letter ... if you love horses or air balloons and stunning
photos ... these links are a must :-)

I stumbled to your site and found it interesting. I twice have
described how to cooperate with things that have their own mind:

1) Icelandic horses

2) Weather and balloon pilots

**************** PUTTING A VALUE TO A CONFERENCE ****************

Having just been to KM Europe and KM Asia and run my own conference,
my mind has been very much on what makes a conference a success so
stumbling over this posting in Werner Vogels' weblog was fortuitous:

I think there are a number of criteria to consider when selecting a
conference:

Innovation - will you hear new stuff that may challenge you
Technical - will you learn about techniques/technologies you will use
Political - will you get a better of view at the strategic level
Networking - will you hook up with (new) people
Career - will this conference help you to advance your professional
goals
Entertainment - Will you be able to have some fun
Location - if the conference sucks can you go somewhere else

Werner then goes on to use these criteria to evaluate a number of
conferences that he has attended recently. Food for thought!

*************** BOOK REVIEW: THE SUPPORT ECONOMY ***************

Book Review: "The Support Economy: Why Corporations Are Failing
Individuals and The Next Episode of Capitalism," by John T. Maloney,
founder, KM Cluster.

Author and Harvard business professor Shoshana Zuboff and James
Maxmin have assembled a potent manifesto on the future of capitalism.
Moving away from the centralized, linear, mechanistic and
'managerial' models of the past, "The Support Economy" elaborates
principles, frameworks and concepts practiced by very few, yet to be
discovered by many. In a thoughtful and engaging style, the authors
introduce entirely new value-generating models including relationship
economics, federated support networks and the ascension and primacy
of the individual to wealth creation.

Qualities common to successful KM practitioners and their
stakeholders such as trust, individualism, value and relationships,
are examined in the greater context of the history and future of
capitalism. Zuboff and Maxmin refract and anneal their breakthroughs
by introducing the principle of ‘Deep Support’ - a fundamental
rethinking of the enterprise value proposition. Deep Support and its
foundations of relationship value, respect, trust and responsibility
are elemental to effective KM.

"The Support Economy" offers a vision of distributed capitalism and
learnings about the future that are simultaneously provocative and
pragmatic. It needs to be read by everyone concerned about the
future. For leading KM practitioners and thinkers it will legitimize
many of your emergent mental models and provide a compelling look at
the horizons of capitalism.

******************** GURTEEN LEARNING EVENTS ********************

In 2004, I am planning a series of Learning Events. The concept of
Learning Events emerged from my London Knowledge Café where Jon
Thorne used the format to enable people to learn by creating
conversations around solving a particular problem or challenge.

In my café Jon presented a complex business problem that could be
solved by many of the concepts behind KM. As part of the café he
asked groups of people to present a business case for change but
without mentioning words like Knowledge Management, Community of
Practice etc. The idea was that people would learn by doing.

Based on the positive feedback Jon recently ran a one day workshop
where he extended the concepts to include how to put together a
tangible proposal that managers would sign off against.

The success of that day has prompted the development of the first
Learning Event in the series - "The One Minute Pitch: Making Concepts
and Ideas work" which is coached by Jon.

**** PRIVACY AND ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATIONS REGULATIONS 2003 ****

If you maintain a European based website or are an internet marketer
then new European legislation on privacy and electronic
communications which takes effect from December 11th may affect you.

The new regulations apply to the use of online public directories
with telephone numbers, addresses or email addresses. They also
apply to the use of cookies and web bugs, and the use of electronic
communication for direct marketing.

*********************** ALL ABOUT COOKIES ***********************

I found this useful website while reading about the new EC
Legislation on privacy and electronic communication.

All About Cookies is a complete resource for internet users, website
owners and marketers that explains what the technology we call
cookies is all about. The pages on this site show how cookies are

********* KNOWLEDGE SHARING, CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION *********

There are two Unicom Seminar events coming up in the UK in the new
year that I would like to draw your attention to. The first is a one
day workshop that I am running entitled "Knowledge Sharing,
Creativity and Innovation"

The ability to act on knowledge is power. Most people in most
organizations do not have the ability to act on the knowledge they
possess." Michael Schrage, Knowledge Inc. Interview

http://www.unicom.co.uk/events/event_details.asp?productid=1275

And the second is a one day conference that I am chairing The 2nd
"Communities of Practice in Action".

http://www.unicom.co.uk/events/event_details.asp?productid=1276

The normal price for both these events is £550 + VAT but I have
arranged a substantial discount for my knowledge letter readers of
£350 + VAT. Simply quote my name when booking.

******************** SPEAKING OPPORTUNITIES ********************

I am planning a number of conferences and other events in 2004 and I
am looking for good speaker/facilitators - preferably ones who have
an interactive interpersonal style and facilitate sessions rather
then "chalk and talk".

I am looking for speakers at all levels - a speaker could be an
established name but I am more interested in speakers who have
practical everyday experience of their subject and can engage their
audience.

If you would like to suggest yourself as a speaker or someone whom
you have experienced then could you please visit my website at :

http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/x0006ea3a

and follow the instructions on the page.

********* WE ARE THE PROBLEM: WE ARE SELLING SNAKE OIL *********

Take a look at this provocative little posting by Sam Adkins on
Learning Circuits Blog.

I read these long tortuous posts bewailing the malaise of our
educational systems. The problem is not "out there". We are the
problem. We are selling snake oil. We now have ample data to show
that:

+ Training does not work.
+ eLearning does not work.
+ Blending Learning does not work.
+ Knowledge Management does not work.

Yet we collectively reify our denial and project the root of the
problem out to an external institutional framework. We are the source
of the problem because we are selling snake oil. It doesn’t work but
there is still plenty of money in it.

****************** MORE REPORTS FROM KM EUROPE ******************

David Skyrme has written a comprehensive report on the recent KM
Europe event:

http://www.skyrme.com/updates/km2003.htm

Also see the KM Europe presentations at:

http://www.kmeurope.com/presentations.asp

And a comment from Lilia Efimova with which I very much agree:

"That was a strange conference. If I think along content vs.
networking scale it was much about networking. Or networking and
peer-generated content. I'm sure I've learnt more from talks around
coffee, food and walking in Amsterdam than from the formal program."

And while I think about it - take a few minutes to browse Lilia's
weblog ... she sees it as her "Learning Diary" and its packed full on
useful material and insights. Thank you Lilia.
