I will be at the KM Middle East Conference in Abu Dhabi and also in Dubai in March 2012 - Comments
To: Gurteen Community Members in the Middle East
A very Happy New Year to you all. I thought you would like to know that
I will be taking part in KM Middle East in the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi on 13 - 14 March 2012 this year.
Last year, I gave the keynote talk provocatively titled "Don't do KM" and I ran a Knowledge Cafe workshop. You can watch the video of my talk here.
This year's conference looks like being another excellent event and I am in the good company of other well known speakers in the KM world including John Girard, HE Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, Chris Collison, Arthur Shelley, Geoff Turner, Noha Abed and Nolwazi Mbananga.
This year I will giving a talk titled "Conversation for Empowerment" and delivering a seminar "Conversation: Your most powerful KM Tool".
Prior to the conference, I will be in Dubai from 7 - 11 March.
If you would to meet with me informally for coffee, lunch or dinner or more formally to consult with me, to give a talk or run a workshop within your organisation then please get in touch.

Open Gurteen Knowledge Cafe in Singapore on 13 Feb 2012 (Free event) - Comments
To: Gurteen Community Members in Singapore
I will be visiting Jakarta from 28 Jan to 12 Feb and Singapore for a few days from 13 - 15 Feb. If you would like to meet with me either formally or informally please get in touch.
While in Singapore, I will be running a free Knowledge Cafe on the evening of Monday 13th February. You can learn more about the event and register here:
I have been running Knowledge Cafes all over the world for the last ten
years. They grew out of my frustration with death-by-powerpoint,
chalk-and-talk type presentations. A Knowledge Cafe is different.
In a Knowledge Cafe, the speaker normally only speaks for 10 - 20 minutes
without slides and poses a questions to the participants (not the
audience!) that is then discussed for the remainder of the session.
This conversational approach a far more interesting and engaging way to
learn than "sitting listening". It also is a wonderful format for informal
networking and I have often run Kcafes where a number of networks have come
together to discuss a topic of mutual interest.
I run open Knowledge Cafes regularly in London. An open Kcafe is hosted by
an organization who sees the value in the Kcafes and they are open to anyone who
cares to come along. They are totally free.
You never know what you might learn, who you might meet and what might
come of the evening. And if you are more of a listener than a talker then
that's OK too ... in a Kcafe you are not compelled to do anything you don't
want to do. Just turn up and enjoy the evening.
There are four parts to the evening:
I will explain the background to the Kcafe.
I will then describe the principles of the Kcafe and the process.
Karuna Ramanathan, Deputy Head of the Center for Leadership Development in the Singapore Armed Forces, who many of you will know, is our speaker. He will then talk for a short while on the theme of the evening "Storytelling".
Finally, I will facilitate a Kcafe on the question "What is the role of conversation and storytelling in the workplace?”.
So come along on February 13th, meet some interesting people and have some great conversation.
Best wishes David

Conversations on Progress: An opportunity to meet Theodore Zeldin on Thursday evening - Comments
To: London Knowledge Cafe Members and Gurteen Knowledge Community members in and around London
I am sure you know that I am a big fan of Theodore Zeldin and how his work has influenced my Knowledge Cafes.
Well, I have just learnt that he is holding an event at the Barbican in London on Thursday evening (14 December).
If you are interested in coming along take a look here and book a ticket £6 online/£9 on the door.
And indicate on Facebook that you are coming so I can look out for you as of course I will be there.
Have you ever thought that there could be more to your conversational life? Historian and philosopher Theodore Zeldin hosts an evening of conversations on progress. Participate in stimulating interactions with people you have never met, and be inspired and provoked. Zeldin is author of An Intimate History of Humanity and President of The Oxford Muse.
I have seen Theodore speak before, he is a very interesting guy and it should be a fun evening!

Mireille learnt about the Knowledge Cafe concept from me when she took part in one of my KCafes a few years back at a KM conference in Barcelona and has adapted the concept for their work at ING. They are doing some very innovative work,
Given, I was visiting for the interview, we decided to make the most of my time and on the Tuesday I will be running a Knowledge Cafe workshop at the ING Business School though I am sorry to say this is not a public event. If you are interested, I hope to run a public Knowledge Cafe workshop later in 2012 similar to the workshop I am running in London in December.
I have scheduled a free day on Monday 31st October and may possibly stay over on the Thursday also.
If you would like to meet-up with me for lunch, coffee or dinner or invite me in to your organisation to facilitate a knowledge cafe, workshop or give a talk then I would love to hear from you.

London Knowledge Cafe: How does conversation change the way we see the world, and can it help change the world for the better? - Comments
To: Gurteen London Knowledge Cafe Members
I would like to invite you to my next London Knowledge Cafe.
Date: Wednesday 17th August 2011, 6:00pm - 9:00pm. This is a free event. Please arrive at 6:00pm or shortly after, which will give you time to settle in and meet other people. Refreshments will be available. The cafe itself will start at 6:30pm. For those interested we normally go for a drink at a local pub after the event.
If you would like to attend please register here. Sign up early as places are limited.
Theme:How does conversation change the way we see the world, and can it help change the world for the better?
In his little book on Conversation, Theodore Zeldin, in the opening chapter, says that "the aspect of conversation that particularly excites him is how conversation changes the way you see the world and even changes the world."
I have a similar interest and its part of my motivation for running my Knowledge Cafes to encourage deeper conversation not only in our business lives but in our personal and societal lives.
But to what extent do we learn to see the world differently through conversation and can it really help change the world for the better? This is the question I want to pose in this Knowledge Cafe.
Come along an share your thoughts. And borrowing on Theodore's words "You may get to emerge a slightly different person".

One Day Workshop: Implementing Knowledge Cafes, 13 September 2011, London - Comments
To: Gurteen Community Members in Europe
On Tuesday 13 September, at the RSA in central London, I will be running a 1-day workshop on Implementing Knowledge Cafes for business purpose.
I have run dozens of these workshops around the world these last few years, most recently in Edinburgh and Copenhagen and have always had tremendous positive feedback.
Don't think for one minute that Knowledge Cafes are about idle chit-chat. They can and should be applied to a good business purpose. Here are some examples of how they can be used.
turn a traditional chalk and talk, death by PowerPoint presentation or meeting into an engaging learning event
transform an internal conference from a series of boring lectures into an exciting day
transform traditional management training courses where younger managers learn from more experienced ones
as a powerful sales tool to engage customers in conversation and thus better understand their needs for and them to better understand your product or service
surface hidden problems and opportunities that exist in the organisation or in a department or project - especially ones caused by lack of communication
break down organizational silos
encourage knowledge sharing and the creation of a knowledge sharing culture
give people a voice so that they feel heard and are thus less cynical and more engaged in their work
bring managers and technologists together after a merger to build relationships, surface new opportunities and address cultural issues
build and improve relationships
improve business networking and make new connections
solicit input and obtain buy-in for a new project or initiative
as part or replacement for a paper survey or interview (the problem is that until people talk - their knowledge fails to surface)
as a stimulus to innovation: Knowledge Cafes connect people to people; people to ideas and ideas to ideas; they challenge people to reflect on their thinking; surface new ideas and make new connections
The day is not just about the Cafe either - we take a look at the whole role of conversation in business. After all, conversation is not only a powerful learning technology, it is the best KM tool we have at our disposal.

Join me in some interesting conversations at KM Australia - Asia Pacific Congress 2011 - Comments
To: Gurteen Community Members in Pacific Region
Just a reminder that KM Australia is only a few weeks away 18 - 21 July.
As you may be aware I will be chairing the event.
What excites me about it is that the Ark Group have agreed to make it conversational in format.
This helps create an informal, relaxed atmosphere in which people can get to know each other, learn from each other and build relationships.
Each speaker concludes their presentation with a question and a short time will be given over to conversation where you can discuss the speakers talk and the question at
your tables before going into a traditional Q&A.
So do come along if you have not already signed up. Speakers include Ron Young, Nicolas Gorjestani and Kim Hai Neo.
But what I hope you are interested in is attending my 1 day Knowledge Cafe Masterclass. I have been running my Knowledge Cafes and workshops all over the world for several years now and I always get great feedback.

An Introduction to the Gurteen Knowledge Cafe in London (Free) - Comments
To: Gurteen London Knowledge Cafe Members and Knowledge Community Members in or near London
I would like to invite you to a free Gurteen Knowledge Cafe in London on the evening of June 29th where you can learn more of what they are about.
I have been running Knowledge Cafes all over the world for the last ten
years. They grew out of my frustration with death-by-powerpoint,
chalk-and-talk type presentations. A Knowledge Cafe is different.
In a Knowledge Cafe, the speaker normally only speaks for 5 - 10 minutes
without slides and poses a questions to the participants (not the
audience!) that is then discussed for the remainder of the Cafe.
This conversational approach a far more interesting and engaging way to
learn than "sitting listening". It also is a wonderful format for informal
networking.
I have run open Knowledge Cafes regularly in London since September 2002. An open Cafe is hosted by
an organization who sees the value in the Cafes and the Cafe is open to anyone who
cares to come along. My London Knowledge Cafes are totally free.
You never know what you might learn, who you might meet and what might
come of the evening. And if you are more of a listener than a talker then
that's OK too ... in a Cafe you are not compelled to do anything you don't
want to do. Just turn up and enjoy the evening.
So if you have never been to one of my Knowledge Cafes then come along on June 29th. It is totally free.
And even if you have attended a previous Cafe you are still welcome and will get to learn a little more of the philosophy behind them.
You will find more details by following the link below and you will need register. Do this quickly as the number of places are limited and the event will quickly fill up.
Knowledge Café masterclass with David Gurteen and presentation of the book: Proactive Reviews by Ditte Kolbaek - Comments
To: Gurteen Knowledge Community members in Denmark
I am writing to tell you about an event that will take place in Copenhagen on 14th June which is both a book launch of Ditte Kolbaek's exciting new book: "Proactive Reviews - Learn from your experiences" and a Knowledge Cafe Masterclass delivered by myself.
Ditte will introduce the book and all participants will receive a copy to take home.
Ditte Kolbaek is Knowledge Manager, Oracle EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa). I have known her for some years and she has been doing some great work in the KM field.
She has led Oracle's Knowledge Management in EMEA for the last six years, where she has developed and implemented Proactive Reviews (a form of After Action Review).
She has 30 years experience of learning from many different angles as a marketing manager, coach, trainer and facilitator.
This will be followed by a Knowledge Cafe Masterclass that I will facilitate.
As I hope you know, I have been running these Cafes for the last ten years all around the world and they are powerful knowledge sharing tools that can be put to all sorts of business purposes.
In the masterclass, I will describe the background to the Knowledge Cafe, the process and how it can be adapted to different ends. We will also run a Knowledge Cafe.
I do hope you can come - it should be an excellent event. Proactive Reviews and Knowledge Cafes have much in common in that they are conversational knowledge sharing and learning processes.
This is my first visit to Denmark for over 15 years - far too long! So I am looking forward to it :-) And if you can't make it to the event but would like to meet me - do get in touch as I do have a little free time.
Best wishes David

London Knowledge Cafe Update: Can you host a Knowledge Cafe in central London? - Comments
To: London Knowledge Cafe Members
It's over two months since my last London Knowledge Cafe with Richard McDermott in mid-February. But I have not been sitting idle on the KCafe front and since then have held an open Knowledge Cafe in Edinburgh, a Knowledge Cafe at the HK KMS conference in Hong Kong, an open Knowledge Cafe in Dubai and a Knowledge Cafe Masterclass at the KM Middle East conference in Abu Dhabi.
I also have other open KCafes in the early stages of planning, possibly in Reading, York, Leeds, Birmingham and Manchester. So, its about time I planned some more in London. This is where you can help. I need a few organisations to offer to host a KCafe in central London. This basically means providing a free room and tea/coffee one evening from 6:00pm to 8:30pm.
If you feel you might be able to do this - then please get in touch and I can send you more details
Oh and one final, note I have set up a Knowledge Cafe Forum on LinkedIn ... not much activity yet as its early days but stop by and join-up and over time I hope we can have some interesting on-line conversations there.
Thanks David

An Open Knowledge Cafe with David Gurteen in Edinburgh - Comments
To: Gurteen Knowledge Cafe Members in Scotland
I am running an open Gurteen Knowledge Cafe in Edinburgh on Thursday 24th February 6:00pm - 8:30pm. A big thanks to David Griffiths of Edinburgh University who is hosting the event.
The Cafe is free and if you are a Gurteen Knowledge Community member or even if you are not - you are welcome to come along for the evening and to bring a friend or a colleague with you.
I realise that some of you don't live so close to Edinburgh but given the interest in my Cafes I know that you may be prepared to travel a little distance to attend one or you may like to inform a friend of the event :-)
If you would like to attend please register here where you will also find more details and the address of the venue.
The theme of the evening is "What is the role of conversation in organisations, is it important and if it is, how do we get better at it?”
I will start by explaining the history of the Cafes; their purpose; their benefits and the process by which they are run and then move on to run a knowledge cafe by briefly talking to the theme and facilitating the session.
If you are not familiar with the Cafe concept you can learn more here. I have run hundreds of them over the last few years and they are really great learning and networking events. Everyone engages with the them and some tremendous insightful, energetic conversations take place.
If you can make it - please do come along and invite a friend. I don't think you will be disappointed.
Best wishes David

London Knowledge Cafe with Richard McDermott: What about thinking? - Comments
To: London Knowledge Cafe Members
If you enjoyed the Knowledge Cafe last year with Richard McDermott then I am sure you will enjoy this one. Same place, same Richard, same me, almost same time of year but of course a different conversation :-)
Date: Tuesday 15th February 6:00pm - 8:30pm. Please arrive at 6:00pm or shortly after, which will give you time to settle in and meet other people. Refreshments will be available. The cafe itself will start at 6:30pm. For those interested we normally go for a drink at a local pub after the event.
If you would like to attend please register here. Places are limited.
Theme: What about thinking? How can we improve the thinking we do with the information and knowledge we have?
Information management has helped many organizations document procedures and insights, organize information, make information widely available, connect far-flung staff, and enable greater global collaboration.
Now many professionals are overwhelmed by the explosion of information and the number of far-flung contacts they need to maintain.
What if we shifted attention from managing information, to understanding how professionals turn that information into insights?
Join us for a little live collaborative research on how we and other professionals in our organizations use information and knowledge to think.

Would you like to host a Gurteen Knowledge Cafe in Brussels? - Comments
To: Gurteen Community Members in Belgium
I will be visiting Brussels 1 - 3 February and would like to run an open Knowledge Cafe on the evening of Wednesday 2nd February and I am looking for a host organization who would be willing to provide a free room for about 30 people and possibly tea/coffee though this is not essential. The Cafe will be free and open to anyone interested in KM.
If you are not familiar with my Knowledge Cafes then you can watch this video taken at a KM conference in Hong Kong. Or you can learn more through the Knowledge Cafe page on my website.
If you think you could help then please contact me and I will let you have more details of the event and my requirements.
Also, although I don't have much time, if you would like to meet up with me for any other reason ... do get in touch.
Regards David
