While I am in Washington DC for the Braintrust International Conference The knowledge cafe is being hosted by the "Federal CIO Council’s Best Practices Committee Knowledge Management Working Group" and is open to members of that group, members of my community and government and federal employees. We are expecting a huge interest and need to cap the number of people attending to about 75. Participants will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Date: Thursday 1st March 2007 6:00pm - 8:30pm. Please arrive at 6:00pm or shortly after which will give you time to settle in and meet other people. Drinks and light refreshments will be available. The cafe itself will start at 6:30pm. Theme: Operationalizing Risk in Knowledge Organizations Based on the work of Zeke Wolfberg at the Defense Intelligence Agency’s Knowledge Laboratory, the Knowledge Café will explore the topic “Operationalizing Risk in Knowledge Organizations”
Adrian (Zeke) Wolfberg directs the Knowledge Laboratory at the Defense Intelligence Agency. He is the co-author of DIA’s 2004 Strategic Plan which created a new goal “To Become a Knowledge-based Organization.” He has served as an intelligence analyst for most of his career. He is a graduate of the National War College where he won an award for his paper “To Transform into a More Capable Intelligence Community,” a recipient of the Director of Central Intelligence’s National Intelligence Certificate of Distinction for the development of an analytic methodology that became a intelligence community standard, and a recipient of an Executive Office of the President’s Special Achievement Award for helping to convince a Latin American president to change his mind about a policy of interest to the United States. His recently published papers include: “The Challenges of Creating a New Analytical Culture (2004),” “Investing in the Social Capital of Knowledge (2005),” “Creating Networks in the Defense Intelligence Agency (2006),” “Full Spectrum Analysis (2006),” and “A Formula for Success: Sometimes you have to shake up the status quo (2006).” He was born in England, is a former U.S. naval officer who lived in Spain and was a naval flight officer aboard a carrier-based reconnaissance aircraft, has an undergraduate degree in cultural change from York University, Toronto, an equivalent undergraduate degree in theoretical mathematics from the University of South Carolina, a master’s degree in systems management from the University of Southern California, and has taken some doctoral-level classes in public policy from George Mason University. The Gurteen Knowledge Cafe I (David Gurteen) will start the evening by explaining the history of the cafes; their purpose; their benefits and the process by which they are run. We will then move on to run a knowledge cafe on the above theme. Zeke will present the theme and I will facilitate the evening to the k-cafe process. I have run 100s of knowledge cafes over the last few years and they are really great learning and networking events. Everyone engages with the theme of the cafe and some tremendous insightful, energetic conversations take place. If you can make it - please do come along. You will not be disappointed. Better still the cafe format is one that you can take back with you and use in your own organizations to help create a more innovative culture.
