Lotus Notes is a client-server, collaborative application development platform from IBM that works with a Lotus Domino server.

This website is built entirely in Lotus Domino 6.5. It consists of a single Notes database. It is stored on my laptop and replicated via the Internet to a Lotus Domino server at the offices of Blue Sky (an ISP based in London, England) via the Internet. Using the Notes replication technology.

The site is in a continual stage of development and experimentation. Its look and feel are simple - as its focus is on structure and content rather than cosmetics.

The power of Domino has been used extensively to create a site that is easy to maintain and enhance. For example, when creating a document (page), it can be assigned to a number of categories from a pick list in Notes. When the document is saved those categories are automatically translated into links to "category documents" using some very simple Notes macro code. This sort of technique is used extensively throughout the site.

Also, whenever, a page is reloaded, a random quote is displayed from a list of quotations, each stored in a separate Notes document. The instructions are stored in a Notes shared field embedded on each page and are less than ten lines of simple Notes macro code.

In addition, when text is written to describe say a book or a person, special codes can be embedded in the Notes text that are translated to HTML by a LotusScript agent when the document is saved.

I also use Lotus Notes for my email and a wide range of other business functions, including my accounts. Quite simply, I could not live without Lotus Notes!
