This Knowledge Cafe is a joint event organised by Gurteen Knowledge and the British Computer Society (BCS). It is expected to be very popular and there are 50 places available to Gurteen Knowledge Community members and 40 places to BCS members that will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. I am sorry but registration for this Knowledge Cafe has been closed as there are only a limited number of places available. If you wish to cancel an existing booking then please email me.
Date: Tuesday 28th April 2009 6:00pm - 8:30pm. Please arrive at 6:00pm or shortly after, which will give you time to settle in and meet other people. Refreshments will be available. The cafe itself will start at 6:30pm. For those interested we normally go for a drink at a local pub after the event. Venue: The British Computer Society The Davidson Building 5 Southampton Street London WC2E 7HA Locator map and transport guide: http://www.bcs-kidmm.org/locations/bcs-ss.html Host: Alan Pollard, the British Computer Society Theme: Imagining the knowledge technologies of the future For millennia, human beings have devised artefacts and tools to help in discovering, storing, organising and sharing knowledge and information. Some of these serve the purposes of the individual (diary, Post-It note, laptop); others work at the level of the enterprise or even the social domain (database, library, Web). This will be an evening for speculating about what kinds of knowledge-handling technologies might serve us in the near and more distant future, both in terms of a personal toolkit, and systems that will operate at the organisational, social and global level. Arthur C Clarke's Third Law of Prediction (1962) says: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Let us take that as our inspiration to project our imagination beyond what information technology does for us today, and share our dreams of the future. Speakers: Alan Pollard, Conrad Taylor, Chris Yapp Alan Pollard Alan Pollard is this year's President of the BCS. As a long term IT practitioner and consultant Alan has a wealth of knowledge about the industry from both the users' and the suppliers' perspectives. As President he is passionate about improving communication and networking among the 68,000 BCS members and is an ardent follower of latest trends for social networking and knowledge sharing. Conrad Taylor Conrad Taylor is a free-range writer and consultant, graphic designer and media producer with particular interests in information design and usability, information and knowledge management and multimedia publishing. He became a member of the British Computer Society by way of its Electronic Publishing Specialist Group, which he currently chairs, and manages the informal discussion network on Knowledge, Information, Data and Metadata Management (KIDMM). Chris Yapp Chris Yapp is an Executive Technology Strategy Consultant with Capgemini UK; before that he was Head of Public Sector Innovation at Microsoft. His interests span scenario planning, futurology and the strategic and management implications of ICTs. He has edited and contributed to a number of books, most recently on the "Personalization of Learning in the 21st century". Chris is an Associate of the Think Tank DEMOS, a member of the Information Society Panel of UNESCO UK, and a member of the BERR Industry forum for the Communications and Content Industries. Chris is a Fellow of the RSA, and a Fellow of the BCS, for whom he also writes a blog on Future IT.
