The knowledge economy and the knowledge society have lately become buzzwords as governments try and move agricultural and industrial economies into the global economy, where knowledge has become the key to competitive advantage and possibly national survival. KM research has mostly focused on knowledge and knowledge management within organizational boundaries, particularly in businesses and in public sector organizations.
Meanwhile, there have been attempts to define and rank knowledge economies and societies by looking at the parts of a society, such as ICT infrastructure, educational output, number of patents awarded, etc. To date, very little has been done to understand "whole" knowledge societies. One reason for this is that it is enormously challenging to fit all the pieces of a knowledge society together to form a coherent picture.
This conference will take a step in this direction by focusing the collective talent of scholars, policy makers and practitioners on how the various parts of society, government, business, academia, and community link together in the pursuit of effective knowledge sharing for the improvement of services, governance, innovation, quality of life, etc. that ultimately creates a more effective and rewarding society.
More specifically, this conference acknowledges and explores the fact that countries in the Asia-Pacific area have unique national cultures, social and economic characteristics and knowledge practices, yet are highly inter-dependent with each other in areas such as business, governance, and education. We call for papers that seek to understand how these differences and inter-dependencies affect knowledge management and policy processes.
