Blogging, Klogging and Knowledge Management
A weblog or a blog, as it is often called, is an informal personal journal that is published publicly on the web. It is updated frequently – sometimes several times a day or maybe just a few times each week.
At its simplest a blog consists of a number of chronological postings. Each posting has a title, a short body of text, a URL, the name of the author and the posted date. More sophisticated blogs can contain further information such as categories, images and multiple links. The author of a blog is often called a blogger and there is even the verb "to blog" so you can say such things as I “blogged” that idea today or I spent a lot of time “blogging this morning.
There are several varieties of blogs – two of the more common are 'personal blogs' as described above and 'knowledge blogs'. The purpose of a knowledge-blog or k-log is to write about, comment on or point to web resources on a specific topic - the subject could be very specific such as wireless technology or broader such as Knowledge Management. There are also ‘news blogs’ where would-be-journalists comment on world or business affairs and that some people feel will revolutionize journalism.
Organizational knowledge-logs or k-logs are a relatively new concept with huge possibilities. They potentially allow anyone in an organization to post material, points of view, links, documents, important e-mails, and pictures to the corporate Intranet where that posted content can be searched, browsed, and archived. In essence they enable the easy sharing of information and knowledge.
Part of what makes K-logs so attractive is the simplicity of the technology and their exceptional ease of use. There are a number of new inexpensive blogging products on the market such as Radio UserLand and Blogger. With these products people can start posting to the web or a corporate intranet within minutes.
In this talk by David Gurteen will introduce you to the concepts, technology, uses and benefits of k-logs.
