The challenge of ensuring that citizens and employees are equipped with the skills and competencies needed to live and work in the 21st century has never been more urgent. Demographic trends, global competition and technological advances make it imperative to raise the level of skills and ensure that these are maintained in line with rapid evolutions in today’s knowledge society.<br> <br> The first International Conference was held at City University, London in July 2007. Research institutes, universities, consulting companies, technology solutions suppliers, adult education institutes, international and national government departments, schools, colleges, industry, accrediting bodies and trade unions, were represented by delegates from 21 countries. Participants reported a high level of satisfaction with the event, and a desire to continue international co-operation in this vital area.<br> <br> Conference themes are as follows:<br> <br> 1. Policy: what policies have been adopted for the acquisition and improvement of key competencies and with what results?<br> 2. Economic innovation and employability: the challenge of raising the level of key competencies in order to contribute to individual employability, organisational development and regional and national prosperity?<br> 3. Social and cultural: the role of key competencies in active citizenship<br> 4. Developing key competencies – practice: challenges and successes in the development of key skills in education, the world of work and the community<br> 5. Recognition and validation of key competencies: ensuring authentic and appropriate formal, non-formal and informal recognition and assessment<br> 6. ICT Skill for Life: the role of Media Literacy Skills in citizenship
