A new cafe discussion of potential interest to those thinking of starting a new enterprise, such as a project or a business (profit or non-profit), or growing an established one, or those supporting enterprise formation and growth, such as those in larger organizations who are about to sponsor new performance improvement projects.
The proposition is that by taking a knowledge perspective one is able to clarify the need to develop an explicit KM strategy as an integral component of a new business plan. A knowledge perspective can help to distinguish different kinds of enterprise on the basis of how 'founder's knowledge' should be managed. For example, in the case of typical consumer products, founder's knowledge needs to be shared quickly (explosively)and as widely as possible,in the case of an artist's enterprise, knowledge is slowly and selectively released to a small market.
The topic is expected to raise issues of intellectual property management, the importance of understanding and appreciating the knowledge of the enterprise founder when supporting and sponsoring new business formation, the importance of designing enterprise support policy according to the nature of founder's knowledge' as the principal knowledge asset, how knowledge is valued, and how business growth is essentially a process of knowledge management.
