In a recent survey of CIOs and CTOs by The Economist Intelligence Unit, it was concluded that "successful KM [Knowledge Management] is about shifting culture and behaviour ? technology is an important element, but is subsidiary."
The increasing use of social computing in organisations underlines this point. Blogs, wikis, IM and other tools from the social computing family are accelerating a significant shift in the way individuals and organisations can (and do) work. The increased ease of use of these tools, together with broader internet access, has blurred the distinction between on-line and off-line communities. Network effects are challenging traditional notions of authority; and control, if there is any, is at best short term. But despite their impact, little, if any, of social software is based on radically new technology.
The challenges of social computing have at least as much to do with the "social" as with the "computing". By better understanding these social concerns, we may be better able to understand how and where best to support organisations with IT.
The aim of this seminar is to help you explore some of these questions and (more importantly) your own ideas with some leading thinkers in the social arena.
