Hi All, Iım writing to you because you have previously indicated your interest in attending David Gurteenıs Knowledge Cafe in the North West. Some months ago I made a promise to Dave Gurteen to reconvene the Knowledge Cafe at a regular venue. Now, finally, I have something to offer you, and I sincerely hope you have not lost your interest. Iım proposing to hold future meetings of the Cafe in central Liverpool at the Ship and Mitre pub (http://www.shipandmitre.co.uk), which is situated at the museum end of Dale St, near John Moores University. The pub has recently been taken on by a new management team and is undergoing a facelift. As a result, a newly refurbished room has become available. I have taken the plunge and booked the KCafe in for 26th June, a Tuesday (6-00pm for a 6-30pm start until 9-00). The agenda will be to create an agenda for coming meetings by deciding on a few themes (see below for some possibilties). The Ship is well known for its extensive range of British real-ale and European bottled beers and lagers (including fruit beers on draft), but thatıs not its only attraction, as I hope to convince you. My thoughts are that this will become a regular meeting place. The room, called the Higher Room (maybe because its for hire or that its above the main room), is very plush and boasts some original Art Deco architecture. Its fully kitted out with WiFi and facilities for making presentations and is conducive to thoughtful dialogue. However, perhaps the pubıs greatest advantage is that it is well served by car parking spaces, which for a venue in central Liverpool is unusual. Not only that, it is easily reached by public transport, both trains and buses (see website‹also due to be refurbed). There is a small charge for the room, but at £20 this is very reasonable (and itıs more comfortable than a university classroom and has more ambience than a hotel). I hope you will like it too. If we can attract 15 to 20 people every time then subscriptions will be minimal. This time everything will be on me, including sandwiches. Come early and your parking will be free too. If you feel encouraged and would like to attend the meeting I would find it very helpful if you could confirm your intention to do so before hand. This has not been the practice in the past but you know it makes sense (contact details below). At this early stage in the revival process you have the opportunity of influencing, if not determining, the future agenda. David G has indicated that we are not obliged to adhere to a strict formula for any of the meetings, although the feature of the KCafe is the process of knowledge sharing which David pioneered. To speed up the revival process I suggest that initially three monthly meetings are arranged giving the opportunity for more people to attend before the winter sets in. We can call these relationship formation events. Also to aid that peer to peer learning I will be setting up a yahoo group specially for us. If you do manage to attend all these early meetings you will be considered Œhardcoreı and hopefully you will then get involved in expanding the Cafe Society with me over the next few years. Everyone is reminded that next year Liverpool celebrates its distinction as European Kapital of Kulture and, potentially, the cafe can assure that the Ks stand for knowledge (and are not simply spelling mistakes). Themes Originally, the London Knowledge Cafe was established by Dave Gurteen as a vehicle for discussing issues that were then emanating from the theory and practice of knowledge management. Although we need not stick to this agenda my thoughts are that we should keep KM in high profile. Below are some possible combinations. You are very welcome to add to the list . Industry themes KM and sectors. What are the special issues associated with KM practice in different sectors or industries. E.g., KM and IPR (knowledge capital and its creation) in the biotech industry KM and the Arts (Arts and Cultural Industries sector) KM practice in the Police Force (Manchester police I know have a system) KM and SMEs. KM and the Public Sector KM in schools KM in universities (why is there nothng explcit?) KM in the NHS Broader organizational themes KM and communities of practice. KM and social networking (not just the My Space kind, but professional networking) KM and social assets . KM, quality, and performance improvement KM and the learning organization KM and human resource management and development practices KM and complexity. This theme is developing and there is an interest in the application of complexity science in Liverpool through the Complexity Network (University of Liverpool) KM and Innovation. A theme with great potential. KM and Diversity. Related to the above in that different people bring different cognitive and cultural perspectives to any solution creating process KMıs role in creating entrepreneurs of the future I sincerely hope to hear from you soon.
