Having obtained his degree he started his working career working in the Economic Development Department of Maidstone Borough Council where he spent much of his time trying to facilitate local companies forming partnerships with French companies. One of biggest barriers was the amount of time directors has to spend away from their businesses and this combined with Jon’s love for technology opened up Jon’s live long challenge of building relationships through technology. He quickly moved into virtual teams and was introduced to Lotus Notes by David Gurteen. Working with several colleagues who grouped together around a research company called TeamPerformance, Jon continued his research into linking virtual teams, and then assessing the cultural impact on relationships based largely on electronic communications. Each step of the research was based on learning by doing, piloting and working with organizations such the Royal Mail, The World Bank, Henkel and Cranfield University School of Engineering. During this period he constantly met marketing and sales people who wanted to sell TeamPerformance ideas and concepts but success depended on selling to people who could not meet very often. All the sales and marketing people said they needed to research potential purchasers then go and have three face-to-face meetings with them and close on the third sales. Jon and all his colleagues rejected this process and wanted to approach based on building relationships with people via email that will allow them to see the possibility of change and to then take small steps towards attaining that possibility. His experiences with TeamPerformance and his passion for KM and new ways of working means that Jon wants to enable other like-minded people to build relationships that allow people to:
