The One Minute Pitch: Making Concepts and Ideas workA Gurteen Knowledge Workshop with Jon Thorne |
|
27th January 2004, Novotel London West, Hammersmith, London, UK
Working in small teams, you will together focus on solving this particular problem, leaving the workshop with the ability to turn your concepts into action in the workplace using the ‘One-Minute Pitch’.
The Challenge
There are two crucial barriers to achieving this.
Define “what” your knowledge initiative will deliver not how it will be delivered. For example, to get funding for your KM initiative you could say “you need funding to set-up a community of practice to co-ordinate how people work on an international accounts system” or you could say “you need funding to ensure that all financial reports are right first time on time all the time”. The first statement requires the senior manager to know what a community of practice is before they can decide. The second focuses on what they should be able to see as a result of having a successful community of practice. Managers do not need to know what a community of practice is. The second statement allows senior managers to see the possibility of supporting your initiative in less than a minute without having to learn anything new. The focus on what is delivered needs to be extended into the project plan where there should be a measurable statement of what will be in place so that any manager will be able to know it has been completed with clear undisputed cost/benefits.
